How to Be a Good Neighbor

Having good neighbors is a common concern of people. Being a good neighbor helps create good neighbors. Having a good relationship with your neighbors is a great asset. They will be the first ones to run to your rescue and reach you in case anything happens. There is also no monetary equivalent to the fun and enjoyable time you will spend with your neighbors for community yard sales, fund raising, or simpler celebrations. To become a good neighbor, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind and be aware of.

Steps to becoming a good neighbor:

  • Respect their privacy. No matter how close your relationship is with your next door neighbor, you still need to give them a piece of their own privacy. This also means that you need to ensure that their space doesn’t get invaded by your dog, your children, or even noises that come from your house. If you have pets in your home, secure them to minimize them straying to your neighbor’s garden or backyard.
  • Keep the noise down. A good neighbor will always be concerned of noise that could disturb neighbors. Radios and television should be kept low. Parents should also take the responsibility of reminding their children of keeping their voices low. Nothing is more annoying than ongoing noises that occur every single day. In case of parties, it is the home owner’s obligation to keep it well under control. If you know that your party may become obtrusive to your neighbors, especially later in the evening, show respect by informing them of your party ahead of time, and invite them if appropriate.
  • Get to know them. Invite them over for a drink, a cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. Bring over cookies or just stop by and introduce yourself. Invite them to your parties, church socials, and neighborhood events. Introduce them to your friends and family.
  • Security lights. Have you ever checked your security lights at night? It may be shining straight towards your neighbor’s house. Or maybe it appears to be excessively bright that makes it difficult for them to sleep. It may be better to point the lights toward your lawn or doorstep.
  • Beautify your home. There is nothing more pleasant than a nice neighborhood view. This also includes your own home. Do you maintain your house well? Keeping your home exteriors well kept, painted, and clean is a pleasant sight for your neighbors. If you have a tree, check from time to time if it has branched out and has leaves falling on your neighbors lawn or sidewalk.
  • Respect others. Being a good neighbor can be achieved by always being courteous and friendly to others. Relationships between you and your neighbors need not be too intimate. However, you should always deal with them with much respect and responsiveness.

The best way to become a good neighbor is by sharing with them your own true self.
