Every year on Christmas at noon friends, families, and former residents of the Golden Gate Barrio join hearts and hands in the celebration of Christmas at the Old Sacred Heart Church in Phoenix, Arizona.
Built by WWII veteran Father Albert Braun and the residents of the Golden Gate Barrio, the Sacred Heart Church was the center of religious and civic activity for this close-knit Mexican-American neighborhood. The Golden Gate Barrio was bulldozed down in the name of progress and city growth, but the members of the community fought to maintain their beloved Church.
The Old Sacred Heart Church still stands at the northeast corner of 16th Street and Buckeye Road in southeast Phoenix, Arizona within the former Golden Gate Barrio. In memory of Father Albert Braun, the Braun-Sacred Heart Center works to preserve the church as a community museum and cultural center.
Join the Braun-Sacred Heart Center and former residents of the Golden Gate Barrio in celebration of Christmas, family, love, and tradition at the annual Christmas Day Mass at the Old Sacred Heart Church.
